A colleague of mine, Lance, lived in Denver growing up. He always shares some of the funniest stories about his experiences in that town. One story, he calls it his home security Denver story, involves him sleeping outside at a friend’s house and setting off the alarm when he needed to go to the bathroom.I’ve often pondered on that story. Mainly because I think it sums Lance up to a tee, but also because they crime rate of certain cities has always interested me. Denver home security is surely directly related to the crime rate and, at least for the time that Lance was growing up, it seems the worst thing people had to fear was a tired little boy trying to go to the bathroom.Having grown up in a small town as well, I can understand Lance’s unfamiliarity with security systems. I didn’t encounter my first system until I was 23 and at college working at a jewelry store part time. I had to set the alarm, lock the safe, and clock out in less than 30 seconds. There were a few times I took too long and I had to call the police to tell them it was a false alarm.Times are so different now. It seems that every store as an alarm and, soon, every house will have a system.

Denver has been a tough place for criminals since 2005, thanks to the Burglary DNA Project launched by the Denver Police Department. The organization was started based on the known facts that burglars often return to crime after they finish serving prison sentences, and that they will sometimes escalate the types of crimes to include violence. Experiences thieves will also perpetrate an average of 240 crimes per year. Using DNA evidence to connect criminals to their crimes is invaluable. Removing 10 burglars from the community can prevent more than 2000 crimes from being committed every year.

DNA is frequently used in cases of violent crimes, such as murder, but rarely used for smaller property crimes. The Denver Police Department and the Burglary DNA project have been so successful that 95 veteran thieves were caught and convicted, causing to a 26% drop in the burglary rate. Using DNA evidence leads to jail sentences that are 10 times longer than those without DNA evidence, removing criminals for longer periods of time.

This type of crime investigation has directly led to an improvement for Denver home security. It has saved Denver taxpayers more than $29 million dollars to date, and it also allows police to focus more time on solving fewer crimes and catching more criminals. Denver residents should continue to use their alarm systems, but rest assured if a break-in ever occurs, the police will be using DNA evidence to catch and prosecute the burglar.
